Antique Japanese 高岡銅器 Takaoka Doki Bronze 花入れ Hanaire Vase, 金彩 Kinzai Gold Gilding, Signed 晴山 Seizan
A substantial and beautifully crafted bronze flower vase (hanaire) from Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture — Japan's foremost centre of traditional copperwork, with a history of over 400 years. This piece exemplifies the celebrated Takaoka bronze tradition, combining exceptional casting craftsmanship with refined surface treatment to produce an object of quiet elegance and commanding presence.
The vase displays a striking marbled surface pattern in tones ranging from warm red to deep grey, achieved through the skilled application of traditional patination techniques unique to Takaoka metalwork. The entire surface is further enhanced with gold gilding (kinzai), which catches the light and subtly shifts in appearance depending on the viewing angle, giving the piece a luminous, ever-changing quality. The overall effect is one of dignified calm — a work equally suited to holding a single flower arrangement (ikebana) or displayed as a standalone decorative sculpture.
The form is upright and well-proportioned, with a solid, weighty feel that conveys the exceptional density and quality of the casting. A maker's signature is present. This is a handsome example of Showa-period Takaoka craft production, representing the enduring vitality of one of Japan's most important regional metalworking traditions.
Takaoka copperware (Takaoka Doki) was designated a Japanese Traditional Craft in 1975 and accounts for approximately 90% of Japan's total cast copper production. Pieces from this region are prized internationally for their technical sophistication and refined aesthetic sensibility.
