Asmat 保护面板 - 阿斯马特中部 - 西巴布亚 (沒有保留價)
A remarkable and authentic Asmat protection panel from the south coast of West Papua, Indonesia, field-collected in 2006. Carved from a single piece of hardwood, this impressive panel embodies the powerful artistic traditions of the Asmat people, whose carvings are among the most celebrated expressions of Oceanic tribal art.
Protection panels were traditionally placed in men’s houses or near important ritual spaces to invoke the presence of ancestral spirits. More than mere decorative objects, they served as spiritual guardians, believed to protect the community from hostile forces, illness, and misfortune. Every carved motif carries symbolic meaning, referring to revered ancestors, fertility, courage, and the close relationship between the human and spirit worlds.
The expressive carving displays the bold, dynamic style for which Asmat art is renowned. The elongated figure, deeply cut relief, and weathered surface reveal the hand of a skilled village carver. Years of traditional use and natural aging have produced a rich patina that enhances both its aesthetic appeal and authenticity.
This panel was acquired directly in the field during an expedition in 2006 and has remained in a private ethnographic collection ever since. Unlike pieces made for the tourist market, it was created within the traditional cultural context of the Asmat people, making it an increasingly scarce example of genuine ceremonial art.
Today, authentic Asmat ritual carvings are highly sought after by collectors of Oceanic art, museums, and ethnographic enthusiasts. This protection panel is not only an impressive decorative statement but also an important cultural artifact reflecting one of the world’s most fascinating carving traditions.
A fine opportunity to acquire an original, field-collected Asmat protection panel with excellent provenance, strong visual presence, and significant ethnographic value.
