Up for auction is a spectacular, fully hand-carved decorative vase created using a masterfully executed openwork (pierced) technique. This piece originates from the Indonesian island of Bali, world-renowned for its exceptionally precise woodcarving traditions.
The vase is carved from a single solid block of dense, dark exotic hardwood showcasing a beautiful grain and rich natural patina (most likely teak or suar wood). The intricate, deep carving depicts traditional Balinese mythological or theatrical characters adorned in ceremonial attire and elaborate headdresses, seamlessly interwoven with dynamic, fluid floral scrolls and foliage. Both the base and the rim are adorned with deeply carved lotus leaf motifs.
The structure is highly three-dimensional – the hollowed-out interior allows light to pass through the openwork sections, creating mesmerizing shadow effects. The bottom of the vase features an elegantly carved floral rosette. A true centerpiece of Asian art that brings a touch of exotic elegance to any interior.
