Byzantine Bronze Pectoral Cross Pendant with Circular Bosses – 8th to 11th Century AD
A cast-bronze pectoral cross attributed to the Middle Byzantine period, formed with four broad, flaring arms and an integral suspension loop above the upper arm. The front is ornamented with five prominent circular bosses arranged at the centre and across the upper and lateral arms, creating a strongly geometric and symmetrical composition. These raised elements may have served as simplified representations of cabochons or settings found on more elaborate precious-metal crosses. The reverse is plain and slightly uneven from casting. The surface preserves an extensive dark green patina with lighter mineral deposits, reddish cuprite inclusions and areas of wear. The form belongs to the wider tradition of portable devotional crosses worn as personal expressions of Christian faith throughout the Byzantine and neighbouring Eastern Christian world. Attribution and dating are based on typology; without archaeological context, a broader Eastern Christian origin remains possible.
