This is a *jubako* (tiered food box) featuring beautiful, intricate carvings of a peacock and a tree. It is a rare size, being smaller than the standard *jubako*. In Japan, *jubako* have long been used to serve delicious meals, much like bento boxes. This exquisite gold carving technique is known as *chinkin* (sunken gold). *Chinkin* is a decorative technique for lacquerware in which a pattern is carved into the lacquered surface, and gold powder or gold leaf is inlaid into the grooves. Originating in China during the Song Dynasty as *sōkin* (spear-gold), the technique was introduced to Japan during the Muromachi period (1336–1573). It subsequently flourished within the Wajima-nuri tradition of Ishikawa Prefecture and was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property in 1955. It is a traditional technique that has been passed down in Japan since 1336. Applying multiple layers of lacquer creates a beautiful, glossy black finish. With natural lacquer, each applied layer requires anywhere from a few days to several weeks to dry completely. After the layers are applied, delicate lines are carefully carved using a chisel. The craftsmanship is magnificent and flawless. This piece is particularly striking for the delicate line-work of flowers adorning its entire surface. The 1873 Vienna World's Fair served as a catalyst for Japanese lacquerware to gain international acclaim as fine art and craftsmanship. This event sparked the production of numerous lacquer boxes, furniture pieces, and folding screens featuring gold decoration, specifically designed for the European market. It was an era when artisans competed fiercely to hone their skills. As a result, the level of detail and perfection in these works reached extraordinary heights. Replicating such quality today is difficult; indeed, it could be considered a lost art. The interior is decorated in vermilion and gold. It is presumed that this item was considered a luxury product even at the time of its creation. The piece is in excellent condition, though there is some scuffing on the gold decoration of the interior surfaces. It has been well preserved.
