香爐 - Korean - 黃銅, 青銅色 - 朝鲜王朝晚期的十九世纪

This impressive bronze incense burner is executed in a distinctive East Asian Buddhist temple style, probably Korea or Japan. Its architectural design, featuring a hexagonal body, elegantly curved upright handles, and a domed removable lid, reflects the classic form of ceremonial incense burners. Each side is decorated with a finely cast relief depicting a seated Bodhisattva surrounded by a flaming mandorla, symbolizing enlightenment, wisdom, and divine protection. The panels are framed by a traditional Greek key (meander) border, a timeless motif in Chinese decorative arts representing continuity, harmony, and eternity. The four gracefully curved legs provide the vessel with a monumental presence while maintaining an elegant and balanced silhouette. Particularly striking are the four stylized mythical creatures integrated into the design as decorative handles and guardians. These zoomorphic figures are inspired by protective temple beasts commonly found in Buddhist art, believed to ward off evil influences and safeguard sacred spaces. The tall, upward-curving handles further enhance the ceremonial appearance and are characteristic of large temple censers used in religious rituals. Similar characteristics in the design can be found in the early Korean gilt-bronze Buddhist reliquary (sarira shrine) dating to the Unified Silla period (8th century). It is an exceptionally rare type of portable shrine made to house sacred Buddhist relics (see last photos). The burner is cast in bronze and has developed an attractive natural green and brown patina over time. This authentic surface oxidation highlights the intricate relief work and enhances the historical character of the piece. Visible traces of use inside the vessel are consistent with its original function as a ritual incense burner. Dating of the object is extremely difficult, probably 19th century. The item will be carefully packed, shipped with insurance and signature on arrival.
