Icon 20th century, approx. 26,9 x 31,9 x 2 cm, wooden panel.
The icon "In Thee Rejoices" is based on the liturgical hymn attributed to St. John of Damascus and sung during the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great. At the center of the composition, the Virgin Mary is enthroned with the Christ Child, surrounded by angels, saints, and the righteous, all united in praise of the Mother of God. The rich, multi-figured composition symbolizes the triumph of the Church and the unity of the heavenly and earthly realms in the glorification of the Theotokos, who gave birth to the incarnate Son of God. This iconographic type became widespread in Orthodox art from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and remains one of the most profound visual expressions of Marian praise.
