Fossil Bivalve (Lamellibranch) Cluster on Original Matrix – Devonian – Morocco
An impressive natural block containing numerous fossil bivalves (lamellibranchs) preserved on their original rock matrix, originating from the famous Devonian deposits of Morocco and dating to approximately 390 million years ago.
This substantial specimen preserves a dense concentration of complete and partially exposed shells, naturally embedded within the sediment exactly as they accumulated on the ancient seafloor. Many individuals retain their characteristic bilateral symmetry and pronounced growth lines, while their three-dimensional preservation provides exceptional depth and realism.
Bivalves, also known as lamellibranchs, were among the most successful marine invertebrates of the Paleozoic seas. Living partially buried within soft sediments or resting on the seabed, they played an important ecological role as filter feeders. Fossil assemblages such as this offer valuable insight into ancient marine communities and the environmental conditions in which they thrived.
The untouched matrix preserves the original fossil association, creating an authentic snapshot of a Devonian shell bed. The natural arrangement of specimens, together with the subtle color variations of the rock and the relief of the shells, makes this piece equally attractive as a scientific specimen and as a display fossil.
Locality: Morocco
Geological Age: Devonian, approximately 390 million years old
Preservation: Numerous three-dimensionally preserved fossil bivalves naturally embedded within the original matrix.
A remarkable fossil block representing an ancient marine shell bed, ideal for collectors, museums, educational collections, and anyone seeking an authentic and visually impressive piece of Paleozoic natural history.
