This is not damage, but the result of a traditional Japanese gilding technique called Hira-oshi, in which thin square sheets of gold leaf are carefully applied one by one to create the finished surface. On top of this meticulously applied gold leaf, a reproduction of an artwork by the Japanese painter Fuji (不二) has been beautifully reproduced. 【About the Dragon and Tiger Motif】 In East Asia, the dragon and the tiger have long been regarded as an auspicious combination.
