Trinitite is a glass produced during the first nuclear explosion, called Trinity, in Alamogordo, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945. Trinitite is a plutonium-based glassy residue formed in the desert. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, trinitite samples were sold to mineral collectors, but most were removed and buried by the United States Atomic Energy Commission in 1952.
