Description: A Hagi ware chawan by Masao Yoshika, formed with a gently rounded body, a subtly irregular rim and a raised foot. The pale cream glaze is enlivened by fine crackling and softly varied areas of lavender-blue and warm brown. Differences in the glaze around the vessel give each side a distinct surface character. The interior continues the finely crackled pale glaze, while the foot retains a more textured finish. The bowl is signed and is accompanied by its signed tomobako wooden box and tomogire cloth. He studied crafts at Tokyo University of the Arts and completed the university’s graduate ceramics course in 1969. He became an associate professor in the Faculty of Education at Yamaguchi University in 1976 and was appointed professor emeritus in 2006. His awards include selection for the seventh reorganised Nitten exhibition in 1975, the Members’ Award at the Japan Contemporary Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1979, the Nitten Special Selection and NHK Chairman’s Award in 1983, and the Nitten Minister of Education Award in 1996.
