Item Description Takaoka Copperware (Takaoka-doki) Scalloped Chrysanthemum Charger by Tsuda Eiju (津田永寿, 1915–2000) A striking decorative bronze charger produced in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture — Japan's foremost centre for cast metalwork for over 400 years. The circular plate has a dramatic scalloped, petal-like rim reminiscent of an open flower, and the surface is worked with fine radiating chased lines that catch the light across its golden-bronze patina. At the centre, a spray of chrysanthemum blossoms and foliage is rendered in crisp relief, a motif long associated with longevity and imperial symbolism in Japanese art. The reverse bears a textured "hammered" ground and the artist's carved seal mark. The piece is accompanied by its original wooden stand (kiridai) with purple cord, allowing it to be displayed upright as a decorative panel, and its original kiri-wood tomobako (artist's signed storage box), inscribed with the character 菊 ("chrysanthemum") on the lid and signed and sealed by the artist inside. This is unused old stock that has been in long-term storage; the tomobako lid has developed a age crack, typical of aged paulownia wood, but the copperware itself remains in fine display condition. Artist Profile Tsuda Eiju (津田永寿, born 1915 – died 2000) was a Japanese caster (chukin) working in the Takaoka copperware tradition. He studied under Tsuda Shinobu (art name Taiju), a member of the Imperial Art Academy, and became heir to the Tsuda family workshop. He served as a judge for the Fukushima Prefecture Art Exhibition, and received honours including a prize at the Export Craft Exhibition, an Encouragement Prize at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Craft Art Exhibition, an Encouragement Prize at the Casting Masterworks Exhibition, and a Special Selection / Hokuto Award at the 5th Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition).
