Item Description This lot presents two Japanese lacquer natsume (tea caddies), traditionally used for storing powdered matcha in the tea ceremony. The larger piece is a rounded, cylindrical caddy finished in deep reddish-brown (aka-tame) lacquer. Its lid and body are decorated with a fine gold maki-e design of bamboo stalks and leaves, rendered in delicate gold hiramaki-e work that continues gracefully across the surface. The smaller, flatter caddy has a low, rounded silhouette with a striking mottled lacquer surface in tones of deep green and dark red-brown, each patch outlined in fine gold detailing reminiscent of tortoiseshell (bekko-style) lacquer work. The interior is finished in plain black lacquer, providing a subtle contrast to the exterior pattern. Both caddies have well-fitted lids that close securely against the body, a hallmark of quality lacquerware construction.
