A piece of the past, made to be worn Remarkably Preserved Medieval Woman’s Ring – Crux Decussata Cross and Apotropaic Decoration Object Type: Woman’s Devotional Ring Cultural Attribution: Medieval Christian Europe Period: Circa 12th–15th Century AD Material: Bronze, cast and engraved Iconography: Crux Decussata (Saltire Cross) with Geometric and Punched Circular Decoration Ring Height : 18.42 mm ± Outer diameter : 17.08 mm ± Inner diameter : 14.00 mm ± Weight : 1.78g Ring Size Conversion EU size: 44 US size: 3 UK size: F approximately - Cultural and Iconographic Assessment Certificate: available upon request (PDF format) - All shipments are sent fully insured - During photography, a warm-toned lighting setup reminiscent of museum display illumination was used to emphasize the object's surface details and historic character in a natural manner. Description This remarkable medieval bronze woman’s ring is distinguished by its elongated oval bezel, carefully engraved cruciform composition and exceptionally well-preserved form. Its relatively delicate proportions correspond with ring types traditionally associated with female personal adornment in the medieval Christian world. The bezel is organised around intersecting diagonal lines forming a crux decussata, or saltire cross. The surrounding geometric compartments contain groups of punched circular motifs, creating a balanced ornamental field. Within Christian iconography, the cross represented fides (faith), salus (salvation) and Christ’s triumph over death. Worn close to the body, such imagery also possessed an apotropaic dimension, expressing the hope of divine protection in everyday life. The combination of a cross and repeated circular devices may additionally evoke eternity, celestial order and the spiritual perfection of God. Rather than functioning merely as jewellery, the ring likely served as an intimate expression of devotio—personal religious devotion and Christian identity. The complete hoop, clearly legible engraved decoration and stable dark patina are remarkably preserved. Warm bronze highlights and isolated green mineralisation enrich its archaeological character, making this an especially appealing example for collectors of medieval Christian jewellery and women’s devotional objects. Information The offered object was acquired in 2026 through an auction associated with A.N. Auction House in Germany and was transferred to us in 2026 by its previous owner, N.A., based in the Netherlands The object has been documented using high-resolution equipment; no intervention has been made to its form or structural integrity, and only limited color-balance adjustment has been applied. Upon request, museum-standard technical photographs may be provided during the auction; if requested prior to shipment, an expert report and a signed ownership document issued in the buyer’s name can be supplied in PDF format within 3–5 business days Statements regarding dating, function, symbolic interpretation, and material identification represent high-probability academic assessments based on typological comparisons, parallels in museum collections, and expert opinion; definitive conclusions require advanced laboratory analysis and fall outside the scope of the platform’s sales process. Prospective buyers are advised to evaluate the images in conjunction with the stated measurements, as high-resolution photography may influence perceived scale. Throughout the presentation and sales process, principles of scholarly consistency, transparency, and good faith are observed, and no object is knowingly offered as a copy or imitation.
