A Japanese biwa 琵琶, of the Chikuzen 筑前 type, a traditional four-stringed lute with 5 frets traditionally used for narrative and poetic performance. The pear-shaped body is crafted from dark brown keyaki 欅 (zelkova) wood, while the soundboard is made of light kiri 桐 (paulownia) wood. The front is decorated with an elegant crescent moon inlay 月 (tsuki). The biwa was introduced to Japan from China during the Nara period (710–794) and developed into several regional types. The Chikuzen-biwa emerged in northern Kyûshû and became especially associated with female performers and the recitation of historical and literary narratives. Good condition with expected traces of use and wear, surface scratches, and few small age cracks, a larger crack to the base with old fills.
