Hand-Carved Elephant and Bird Wooden Storage Boxes with Distressed Blue Finish, Set of Two, 1980 A distinctive pair of hand-carved wooden storage boxes formed as an elephant and a long-necked bird. Their sculptural animal forms, carved geometric and floral decoration, divided interiors and layered blue-painted surfaces give the set strong decorative presence while retaining practical storage use. Displayed together, the contrasting silhouettes create an especially effective folk-art composition. The elephant box has a broad circular body with a projecting carved head and trunk. Its lid is densely decorated with concentric floral and geometric carving. The bird box has an elongated oval body, downward-curving carved head and similarly detailed lid. Both interiors are divided into several compartments, making them suitable for jewellery, small collectibles or decorative display. The surfaces show an attractive combination of blue paint, exposed natural wood and age-developed patina. The carved details remain visually pronounced, and both hinged lids open to reveal the compartmented wooden interiors.
