The figures wear colourful traditional costumes made from patterned batik-style textiles, embellished with beads, sequins, fringes and decorative trim. Each character has an expressive, distinctive face and elaborate headdress. Wayang Golek puppets originate from Java, Indonesia, where they are traditionally used to perform stories drawn from mythology, history and epic literature. They are also highly decorative cultural objects.
