Vintage Japanese Enamel Sign “Ume no Sono” Premium Tea – Double-Sided – Showa Era
A beautiful vintage Japanese double-sided enamel advertising sign for “Ume no Sono” (梅の園), featuring a classic advertisement for premium Japanese tea.
The inscriptions read “Kōkyū Meicha” (高級銘茶 – Premium Fine Tea) at the top and “Ume no Sono” (梅の園) prominently in large red characters below.
The name “Ume no Sono” can be translated poetically as “Garden of Plum Blossoms.” The plum blossom (ume) has long held a special place in Japanese culture, symbolizing the arrival of spring and admired for blooming while the weather is still cold. Combined with the words “Premium Fine Tea,” the name gives the product an elegant and distinctly Japanese identity.
The design is wonderfully simple yet powerful. A deep tea-green band across the top contrasts with the clean white background, while the enormous vermilion-red characters create a strong visual presence. This bold use of color and expressive Japanese typography is characteristic of commercial enamel advertising from the Showa period.
Signs like this were once a familiar sight outside traditional tea merchants and neighborhood shops throughout Japan. Before modern illuminated advertising became widespread, durable enamel signs served as colorful landmarks, announcing the products available inside to people passing along the street.
With its bold red Japanese calligraphy, classic green-and-white tea colors, double-sided design and evocative “Garden of Plum Blossoms” name, this is an appealing piece for collectors of Japanese advertising, Showa-era memorabilia, vintage enamel signs, Japanese tea culture and retro industrial décor.
More than an advertising sign, it is a charming surviving fragment of the traditional Japanese tea shops and streetscapes of the Showa era.
