Byzantine Lead Seal with Greek Inscription – 10th to 12th Century AD A Byzantine lead seal (bulla) of circular form, bearing a heavily worn but still partially legible Greek inscription arranged across the fields. Both faces preserve raised lettering and traces of the original border, while the irregular edges and granular surface display substantial age-related wear and encrustation. Lead seals of this type were widely employed throughout the Byzantine Empire to secure and authenticate official, administrative, ecclesiastical and private correspondence; the inscriptions commonly recorded the owner’s name, titles, office or an invocation. The epigraphic character and overall fabric of this example are consistent with Byzantine sigillographic production of the Middle Byzantine period.
