G. & J. Zair sterling silver-mounted antler hunting crop – Birmingham 1922
A fine early 20th century English hunting crop by G. & J. Zair of Birmingham, combining a distinctive natural antler handle with sterling silver mounts, a leather-covered shaft and traditional woven crop section.
The sculptural antler handle retains its natural form and texture and is decoratively shaped along the underside. It is joined to the shaft by a substantial sterling silver collar, clearly struck with the G&J.Z maker’s mark, Birmingham assay marks and the date letter for 1922.
G. & J. Zair were established Birmingham whip makers specialising in quality riding and hunting equipment. Their silver maker’s mark was registered in 1884, and the firm became particularly associated with silver-mounted crops and hunting whips.
The collar is additionally stamped “STEEL LINED & GUT…”, an interesting detail relating to the traditional construction of the crop. The reddish-brown leather-covered shaft is joined by a second hallmarked silver mount to the woven lower section and leather keeper.
Good antique condition with attractive age-related patina. The antler handle is well preserved, while the silver mounts show light surface wear and minor marks. The leather-covered shaft remains firm, with rubbing and areas of loss to the original surface finish. The woven section and leather keeper show expected wear from use. Overall, the crop presents very well and retains considerable period character.
