Museum Antique Early 20th C Silver Shindeshahi Tode • 397g Heavy Solid Silver Sutlada Kada • Royal Indian Statement Wrist Cuff • 2.5"
This extraordinary, genuine early 20th-century Western Indian Shindeshahi Tode (Sutlada Kada) is a monumental triumph of historic silversmithing. Masterfully hand-forged, this rigid wrist cuff features a legendary interlocking design in which thick strands of solid silver wire are meticulously looped, coiled, and layered into a dense, architectural spiral. While its massive weight of 397 grams rivals that of heavy tribal foot armour, this magnificent piece is an authentic lower-wrist bracelet.
Historically commissioned by the wealthy matriarchs of Rajasthan and the Maratha royalty of Western India, these ultra-heavy Tode cuffs were designed to display immense personal riches and high societal status directly on the forearms. Unpolished and beautifully preserved, the silver features a breathtaking, naturally aged deep tarnish and dark, dramatic patina. This rich oxidisation highlights every hand-carved twist, offering an incredible contrast against the smooth, time-worn contours of the silver.
With a standard ladies' wrist diameter of 2.5 inches (6.5 cm), this structural piece is fitted with its traditional, prominent screw/pin terminal closure. This allows the rigid, heavy cuff to open easily and clamp securely onto the wrist, making it an incredibly wearable high-fashion statement piece or a crown jewel for an ethnographic collection.
