Due to privacy regulations, the name of the previous owner could not be disclosed. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This finely cast bronze object is an early medieval plate buckle fitting, decorated in relief with a highly stylised zoomorphic motif. The elongated design, bordered by raised mouldings, incorporates an animal mask with prominent eyes and an elongated muzzle or beak, while the lower field contains an interlaced ornamental motif. At the upper end, the surviving attachment lugs indicate that the fitting was originally mounted to a leather belt as part of a complete buckle assembly. Animal ornament became one of the defining artistic traditions of early medieval Europe. During the 6th–8th centuries, craftsmen transformed animal forms into elegant abstract compositions, combining flowing lines with symmetrical designs. These zoomorphic motifs carried aesthetic significance and may also have been intended to convey protection, strength, or status. Such decorative styles were shared across Germanic cultural traditions, including the Merovingian, Anglo-Saxon, Frisian, and Scandinavian worlds. Belts were essential elements of early medieval dress and often represented far more than practical fasteners.
