"17th–18th Century Bronze Buckles Collection (48) Culture / Period: 17th–18th century Date / Period: 17th–18th century Material: Bronze Dimensions: 16–75 mm Condition: Good condition No shipping outside the European Union. Due to complex export regulations concerning cultural goods, this item cannot be shipped outside the EU. Please ensure you have a delivery address within the European Union before placing a bid. Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 827 The current owner, S.N.J. S., purchased the Bronze Buckles Collection (48) from E.R. in Doesburg, the Netherlands. The previous owner, E.R. from Doesburg (the Netherlands), stated that the objects had been in his collection since the 1990's. According to the previous owner, the buckles had previously been part of a private collection in the Netherlands since the 1990's. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the objects was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This collection comprises forty-eight bronze buckles, dating to the 17th–18th century, representing a broad range of forms and sizes used for clothing, belts, footwear, harnesses, and personal equipment during the Early Modern period. The group includes both complete examples and individual buckle frames, illustrating the variety of buckle types in everyday use. Bronze buckles were essential functional fittings throughout Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They secured breeches, shoes, waist belts, straps, saddlery, and military equipment, while larger decorative buckles were often worn as visible accessories reflecting contemporary fashion and social status. Smaller examples commonly belonged to shoes, bags, or harnesses, whereas larger and more elaborate forms were used on belts and military accoutrements. These buckles were cast in moulds and subsequently finished by filing and polishing before iron or bronze pins were fitted. The diversity of shapes within this collection demonstrates the specialised production of buckle makers during a period when metal dress accessories became increasingly standardised through organised workshops and expanding regional trade networks. Such objects circulated widely through local markets and international commerce, reaching all parts of Europe. Assemblages of this type are particularly valuable for illustrating the evolution of Early Modern dress accessories and craftsmanship. They provide insight into changing fashions, technological development, and the everyday material culture of civilians, merchants, travellers, and soldiers alike. Dating to the 17th–18th century, this collection offers a direct and tangible connection to the Early Modern world, where buckles were indispensable components of clothing and equipment, combining practical function with decorative craftsmanship in daily life."
