Giant Box Crab – Calappa calappa (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Calappidae
A well-preserved natural-history specimen of the Giant Box Crab, Calappa calappa, displaying the characteristic strongly convex, rounded carapace and large, powerful claws that can be folded closely beneath the body.
The specimen has a distinctive pale cream coloration, resulting from the preservation process, with the characteristic sculptured and granular surface of the carapace still clearly visible. The robust chelipeds and compact body give this species its characteristic “box-like” appearance.
Calappa calappa is a tropical Indo-Pacific species occurring across a wide region from the western Indian Ocean through Southeast Asia and the Pacific. It is a benthic crab associated with sandy and muddy marine bottoms. The species can reach approximately 12–13 cm in carapace width, making this specimen of approximately 11 cm a substantial example.
Scientific name: Calappa calappa
Common name: Giant Box Crab / Smooth Box Crab
Family: Calappidae
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Approximate size: 11 cm
Condition: Preserved natural specimen, with minor signs consistent with age and preparation.
A distinctive marine zoological specimen suitable for a natural-history collection, educational display or cabinet of curiosities.
