AD 1000–1075). Within the Norse visual world, such hybrid beasts evoke the broader dýr (beast) tradition, in which powerful and supernatural creatures inhabited the boundary between the human and mythic realms. With its intertwined creatures and flowing contours, Ringerike ornament formed part of the symbolic vocabulary of the late Viking world and may have carried associations with hamr (form or shape), transformation, protection and supernatural potency.
