Model Overview

An unusual and highly charismatic vintage Rosta Swiss mechanical wristwatch, most likely dating from the late 1940s to early 1950s. Its most striking feature is the remarkably large approx. 37–39 mm case, an oversized dimension for a wristwatch of this period, when typical men’s watches were considerably smaller.

The watch features a beautifully aged black dial with Arabic numerals, railway-style outer minute track and subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock. Together with the slender hands and long lugs, the design has the unmistakable military/field-watch character associated with the 1940s.

Rosta is a little-known but documented historical Swiss watch name associated with A. Stämpfli of Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, with the Rosta trademark registered in 1946 for watches, movements and watch components.

This is therefore an interesting piece for collectors looking beyond the major mainstream Swiss brands.

Dial & Hands

The black dial is the defining feature of the watch, displaying attractive natural ageing and considerable period character.

It features cream-coloured Arabic numerals, an outer railway minute track and a traditional small-seconds register at 6 o’clock. The discreet ROSTA signature is positioned below 12.

The hands and dial have developed visible patina consistent with the considerable age of the watch. Rather than having the appearance of a modern restoration, the watch retains the authentic visual character expected from an approximately 75-year-old timepiece.

Movement

The watch is powered by a traditional Swiss hand-wound mechanical movement with subsidiary seconds.

The movement photographs show a substantial period construction with visible ruby bearings, large winding wheels, traditional bridge architecture and an A/R-type regulator.

The exact calibre number is not visible in the photographs, and therefore no unsupported calibre identification is claimed. This is preferable for a collector watch of this age, where many smaller Swiss brands used movements supplied by established ébauche manufacturers.

Historical Context

The Rosta trademark is documented in connection with A. Stämpfli, Biel/Bienne, one of Switzerland’s historic watchmaking centres, and was registered in 1946.

The design of this particular watch closely follows the military and field-watch language of the 1940s: a highly legible dark dial, Arabic numerals, peripheral minute track and subsidiary seconds.

Importantly, the watch is described as military-style. No claim is made that this particular example was officially military-issued, as no military provenance or issue markings are available.

Collector Appeal

What makes this Rosta particularly interesting is its size.

At approximately 38–39 mm without the crown, it was genuinely oversized by the standards of the late 1940s. This gives the watch a surprisingly contemporary wrist presence while retaining completely traditional vintage proportions and aesthetics.

The combination of an obscure documented Swiss brand, oversized case, black dial, small seconds and strong untouched period character makes it considerably more interesting than a conventional small dress watch from the same era.

Condition Report

The watch is presented in honest vintage condition, with substantial age-related character clearly visible in the photographs.

The dial shows patina, marks and ageing. The case has scratches, wear and areas of oxidation consistent with its age. Oxidation/verdigris is also visible around portions of the inner case perimeter.

The mechanical movement appears complete in the supplied photographs and shows normal age-related traces. Given the age of the watch, future servicing and routine mechanical maintenance should always be expected.

The leather strap is a later replacement and is not original to the watch.
