This lot consists of two Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints from the series “Honcho Buyu Kagami” (本朝武優鏡) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861), bearing his Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi (一勇斎国芳) signature. Kuniyoshi was one of the great masters of late Edo-period ukiyo-e and is particularly celebrated for his powerful Musha-e (warrior prints). His dramatic compositions, expressive figures, elaborate armor, and energetic storytelling established him as one of the most influential artists of nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock printing. The Honcho Buyu Kagami series presents celebrated warriors and heroic figures from Japanese history and legend. These two prints demonstrate Kuniyoshi’s characteristic ability to combine detailed costume and armor with bold poses and a strong sense of movement. Executed as traditional Nishiki-e polychrome woodblock prints, the works offer an excellent example of Edo-period popular art and samurai imagery. They would appeal to collectors of Kuniyoshi, Utagawa-school prints, Musha-e, and historical Japanese art. As older works on paper, they may show fading, stains, foxing, creases, trimming, small tears, backing, repairs, or other age-related wear.
