Vintage Japanese “Sanpas” Medicine Enamel Sign – Showa Era

A charming vintage Japanese enamel advertising sign for “Sanpas” (サンパス), a product promoted for the relief of stiffness and pain.

The smaller inscription reads:

“For stiffness and pain” (こりと痛みに)

followed by the product name “Sanpas” in exceptionally large red characters.

One of the most appealing features of this sign is its remarkably simple graphic design. Using only a **white background and vivid red lettering**, the manufacturer created an advertisement that could be recognized instantly, even from a distance. The oversized vertical typography is particularly characteristic of Japanese commercial signs from the Showa period.

Before television and modern digital advertising became part of everyday life, enamel signs like this were an important part of Japan’s streetscape. They were commonly displayed outside pharmacies, general stores, and small local shops, as well as on the exterior walls of buildings along roads connecting towns and rural communities.

Medicine advertisements were especially familiar sights. A short phrase explaining the ailment, combined with a memorable product name in enormous lettering, allowed manufacturers to communicate their message immediately to people passing by.

Today, these signs offer something quite different from their original purpose. They have become surviving pieces of Japanese commercial and graphic design history, preserving the visual atmosphere of the Showa era.
