Item Description
This cast copper vase (hanaire) bears the signature "峰雲" (read: Hōun), a mark found on 20th-century works produced within the Takaoka Dōki tradition that flourished in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture. Works bearing this signature are considered to date from the Shōwa period (1926–1989).

Takaoka has been one of Japan's foremost centres of cast copperware since the early Edo period. The craft originated when the Maeda clan of the Kaga Domain invited skilled foundry workers to establish workshops there, subsequently developing as a Buddhist metalworking tradition. By the Meiji era it had gained sufficient renown to be exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle. In 1975 it became the first craft region in Japan to be designated a National Traditional Craft, and today the majority of cast copper goods produced in Japan come from Takaoka.

This piece features a tapering cylindrical copper body with a natural aged patina (verdigris), and is decorated with relief ornamentation of the kind seen on contemporaneous Takaoka vases, which commonly employ designs such as cranes and carp. It is thought to have been used as a flower vase (hanaire) for ikebana arrangements or as a decorative object in a tokonoma alcove, and remains entirely suitable for use as an interior decorative piece today.
