Each heart-shaped ear cover is made of rich cobalt-blue silk satin and finely embroidered with elegant orchid and foliage motifs in pale silk threads. The restrained palette and flowing composition give the embroidery a refined and graceful appearance. In the upper corner of each ear cover is a small red-bordered lozenge enclosing a stylised seal-script “Shou” (壽) character, a form commonly encountered in traditional Chinese folk embroidery. The character has been highly decorative and geometrically transformed, while retaining its auspicious meaning of longevity and good fortune. The combination of orchid motifs and the Shou character reflects traditional Chinese symbolism. Orchids have long been associated with refinement, elegance and virtue, while the Shou character represents wishes for a long and blessed life. The edges are carefully finished with a dark zigzag blanket-stitch border, preserving the distinctive original shape of the textiles. These textiles were traditionally worn as ear covers, or nuan’er, during the colder months to protect and warm the ears. Such accessories formed part of traditional Chinese winter dress and were often finely embroidered, combining practical function with decorative craftsmanship. The pair has subsequently been mounted together within an old wooden frame against a pale textured backing, creating an attractive decorative presentation. A substantial aged metal hanging loop is fitted to the top of the frame, allowing the piece to be displayed directly on a wall. The contrast between the deep blue satin, delicate pale embroidery, red Shou cartouches and aged wooden frame gives the piece considerable decorative appeal, while retaining the intimate character of late Qing textile craftsmanship.
