Childhood bust of Louis XIV to right, laureate, draped and cuirassed in the antique style, wearing the Order of the Holy Spirit; a long lock of hair descends toward the shoulder. Small official’s mark below the bust; another mark may occur above the head.
Rev: SIT · NOMEN · DOMINI · [mint mark] · BENEDICTVM · [date]. Crowned shield of France bearing three fleurs-de-lis arranged two and one; mint mark below the point of the shield.

Louis XIV (1643–1715 AD), known as the Sun King, transformed France into Europe’s leading centralized monarchy. Governing personally from 1661, he concentrated royal authority, expanded Versailles and patronized the arts. His frequent wars enlarged France but imposed severe financial burdens, leaving the kingdom powerful yet deeply indebted at his death.
