Title: Medieval Bronze Ring with Engraved Radiant Star Bezel – Ca. 11th–13th Century AD – 23.24 mm Description: The radiating star or "star-in-disc" is one of the most enduring protective motifs of the medieval found from the Balkans and Anatolia through Central Europe. A star with rays cut in this way was understood as a solar or celestial sign, invoking light against darkness, and was worn to bring the wearer good fortune and to deflect the evil eye. Rings of this class were made by local casters and finished by hand with a graver, then worn daily by townspeople, farmers and soldiers alike — the crisp, deliberate strokes here show a maker working confidently within a long-established regional idiom. The flat, well-defined bezel would also have taken a clear impression in wax, so the ring may have doubled as a simple personal seal. A medieval bronze finger ring with a broad circular bezel engraved with a bold four-pointed star, its quadrants filled with sheaf-like clusters of fine incised lines that give the design a radiating, sunburst quality. The bezel measures 13.19 mm across, the ring stands 23.24 mm in height and weighs 5 grams. The hoop tapers from moulded, collared shoulders — each marked with transverse ribs and small hatched panels — down to a slender, gently rounded band, a well-proportioned profile typical of cast bronze rings of the period. Condition: Complete and structurally sound, with a handsome dark olive-green patina and lighter earthen tones across the surface. The engraved star and radiating lines remain crisp and fully legible; the shoulders retain their moulded detail. Light surface wear, casting irregularities and minor edge nicks are consistent with age and period use. No restorations or modern repairs. Still wearable. Details: Material: Bronze Period: Medieval, ca. 11th–13th century AD Bezel width: 13.19 mm Height: 23.24 mm Weight: 5 g Ring size: 54 (EU) Provenance: Ex European private collection, acquired on the German art market in the late 1990s.
