日本备前烧酒器套装——徳利与盃——天然窑变釉——署名木箱(Tomobako) - 陶瓷 - 日本 - 20世紀
A masterfully crafted Japanese Bizen ware sake set, comprising a tokkuri (sake bottle) and a matching ochoko (sake cup), accompanied by its original signed tomobako (wooden storage box). This set exemplifies the essence of Bizen ware — a tradition that relies entirely on the natural interaction of clay, fire, and ash during firing, without any applied glaze.
The tokkuri features a rounded, voluminous body with a short, tapered neck and slightly flared rim. Its surface displays a deep, earthy brown base adorned with mottled patches of gray-green and black-blue, resembling the textured skin of a snake or scorpion — a hallmark of Bizen’s “black sesame” or “snake-skin” kiln transformation. This effect is born from pine ash melting and bursting across the vessel’s surface during high-temperature firing, making each piece uniquely unpredictable.
The ochoko is compact and sturdy, with a wide rim for easy handling. Its glaze blends rich rust-reds with subtle gray-blue transitions, offering a tactile contrast between roughness and warmth. Together, the pair embodies the wabi-sabi philosophy — celebrating imperfection, natural materials, and the quiet beauty of age and use.
The wooden tomobako bears ink calligraphy reading “Nanzen Tokkuri” and the artist’s signature “Asahi,” affirming its provenance as a studio-crafted work by a recognized potter. Such sets are not merely functional; they are collectible artifacts that reflect centuries of Japanese ceramic mastery.
