中世紀,十字軍時代 青銅色 Cross pendant, Amulet, Talisman, 罕见的拜占庭铜质胸前十字架,具球形端饰——十字军时期,11世纪至13世纪 - 32 mm (沒有保留價)

A striking Byzantine bronze pectoral cross dating to the 11th–13th century, belonging to the medieval Christian tradition of the Crusader era. This compact yet remarkably substantial object represents the world of personal Christian devotion during a fascinating period when Byzantium, the eastern Mediterranean and the Crusader states existed within an environment of intense religious and cultural interaction. Measuring only 32 × 24 mm and weighing 5.38 g, the cross has a surprisingly solid presence for such a small personal devotional object. Distinctive Form and Powerful Geometry The cross displays an unusual and almost sculptural construction. At its centre is a substantial diamond-shaped body, from which four short arms extend. Each arm terminates in a pronounced globular finial, creating a balanced and immediately recognizable silhouette. The upper arm continues into the original integral suspension loop. Its preservation clearly demonstrates the object's original function: this cross was made to be suspended from a cord or chain and worn close to the body. Despite its modest dimensions, the combination of the diamond-shaped centre and four rounded terminals gives the cross an unexpectedly monumental visual character. Byzantium and the Christian World of the Crusader Era The 11th–13th centuries formed one of the most dramatic periods in the history of the eastern Mediterranean. The Byzantine Empire remained one of the principal centres of Eastern Christianity, while pilgrims, merchants and military expeditions from Western Europe travelled through Byzantine and neighboring territories. Within this environment, personal objects of Christian devotion — including pectoral crosses, medallions and miniature sacred images — formed an important part of everyday religious life. For its medieval owner, a cross such as this was far more than an ornament. Worn directly upon the chest, it represented personal faith, spiritual identity and the hope of divine protection. It could accompany its owner through everyday life, long journeys and pilgrimages, as well as moments of uncertainty and danger. An Object Made to Be Carried The particular fascination of small pectoral crosses lies in their intensely personal nature. Coins passed repeatedly from hand to hand. Weapons could have several owners. A pectoral cross, however, was an object intended to remain physically close to one individual. The signs of age visible on this example therefore form an integral part of its history. The bronze has developed an attractive natural archaeological patina, combining green, olive and earthy brown tones. Mineral deposits, small surface irregularities and traces of prolonged burial remain visible. At the same time, the principal elements of the design remain remarkably clear: the central diamond-shaped body, four characteristic globular terminals and original suspension loop are all well preserved. This naturally aged surface gives the object the distinctive archaeological character so desirable in authentic medieval bronze artifacts. Faith Carried Close to the Heart In the medieval Christian world, the cross was among the most powerful and universally recognizable symbols of faith. For a Byzantine believer, pilgrim or traveller, a small bronze cross could become an object rarely left behind. It accompanied its owner across cities, roads and seas, silently witnessing a lifetime now lost to history. The identity of the person who once wore this particular cross is unknown, and there is no basis to claim that its owner personally participated in a Crusade. Nevertheless, the object belongs to the material and spiritual world of Christianity during that remarkable era. Approximately eight centuries later, not only the ancient bronze survives, but also the idea embodied within it — faith and protection carried physically close to the heart. A rare and visually distinctive Byzantine bronze cross of the Crusader era, particularly appealing for collections of Byzantine antiquities, medieval Christian artifacts and the archaeology of the eastern Mediterranean.

Distinctive Form and Powerful Geometry

The cross displays an unusual and almost sculptural construction.

Byzantium and the Christian World of the Crusader Era

The 11th–13th centuries formed one of the most dramatic periods in the history of the eastern Mediterranean.

An Object Made to Be Carried

The particular fascination of small pectoral crosses lies in their intensely personal nature.

Faith Carried Close to the Heart

In the medieval Christian world, the cross was among the most powerful and universally recognizable symbols of faith.

For a Byzantine believer, pilgrim or traveller, a small bronze cross could become an object rarely left behind. It accompanied its owner across cities, roads and seas, silently witnessing a lifetime now lost to history.
