The Thracian Chersonesos, the modern Gallipoli peninsula, held great strategic importance in antiquity because it controlled the European side of the Hellespont, the narrow sea route linking the Aegean with the Black Sea. Its Greek cities prospered from trade and agriculture, while control of the peninsula was contested by Athens, Persia and later Macedon. Its position made it a vital military and commercial gateway between Europe and Asia.
