Object description
An authentic vintage folding surveyor’s leveling staff, also known as a stadia rod, originating from the professional world of land surveying, topography and technical drawing.
This imposing measuring instrument was designed for use by surveyors, engineers, architects and construction professionals during topographical surveys and leveling operations. Its characteristic graduated scale, with large red numerals and contrasting black markings, was designed to remain clearly visible when observed from a distance through an optical leveling instrument.
The staff is constructed from wood and metal, with several articulated sections connected by robust original hinges and mechanical fittings. The folding mechanism allowed this approximately three-metre-long instrument to be transported and stored more easily while retaining the necessary length for professional fieldwork.
The object retains a remarkable amount of its original character and patina. The painted wooden structure displays numerous signs of age, including areas of paint loss, scratches, surface cracks and abrasions, while the metal fittings show oxidation and natural ageing. The measuring scale itself remains highly legible and gives the piece an unmistakable graphic and industrial appearance.

Historical use

Surveying staffs of this type were essential tools in traditional land surveying before the widespread adoption of modern electronic and digital measuring equipment.
During a leveling survey, the staff was positioned vertically at a measured point while the surveyor observed its graduated face through an optical level or similar surveying instrument. Readings taken at different points allowed the professional to calculate differences in elevation and establish accurate height references across a site.
The ability to extend the staff to approximately 4 metres was particularly useful when surveying larger differences in elevation or when a greater measuring range was required. Once the work was completed, the articulated sections could be folded and the extendable section retracted, making the instrument considerably easier to transport...

Design & decorative appeal

Today, instruments such as this have acquired a completely different role. No longer needed for everyday surveying, they have become fascinating examples of industrial and technical design, particularly appreciated for their authentic materials, functional construction and unmistakable visual language.
When fully extended, its tall vertical form and striking red-and-black graduation create an almost graphic artwork in itself. The combination of aged wood, painted metal, exposed mechanical hinges and the large numbered scale gives the object a strong industrial, architectural and vintage aesthetic.
It would make an exceptional decorative feature in an architect’s or surveyor’s office, an artist’s studio, loft, industrial interior, gallery, workshop or creative workspace. Displayed vertically against a wall, it can function almost like a large-scale typographic artwork while retaining its original historical identity.
It could also be displayed alongside vintage drafting instruments, architectural drawings, technical books and other surveying equipment to create a highly evocative mid-century technical office environment.
Rather than restoring away its imperfections, its existing patina is best appreciated as part of its history. Every worn area, scratch and trace of oxidation contributes to the authentic appearance of an object that was originally designed as a working professional instrument.

Construction and dimensions

The staff is constructed from wood and metal, with articulated sections connected by robust original hinges and mechanical fittings. Its folding construction allowed the instrument to be transported and stored more easily despite its considerable working length.
A particularly interesting feature of this example is the additional extendable section, which can be pulled out to increase the overall working length. When fully extended, the staff can reach approximately 4 metres, making it a particularly substantial professional surveying instrument.
This combination of a folding structure and an additional telescopic/extendable section is both practical and visually distinctive, reflecting the functional engineering typical of professional surveying equipment of the period.

Condition

Vintage condition with authentic signs of age and professional use.
The wooden sections show scratches, abrasions, cracks in the aged finish and areas where the original paint has worn away. The metal components display oxidation, surface rust and signs of ageing. The graduated measuring surfaces show visible wear consistent with prolonged use.
The folding hinges and mechanical construction are clearly visible in the photographs.
Please note that this is an antique/vintage professional instrument and not a newly manufactured measuring device. It is offered primarily as a historical, collectible and decorative object.
Please carefully examine all photographs, which form an integral part of the description and document the condition and patina of the item.
