Dayak Amulet Necklace with Animal Teeth, Borneo
An intriguing traditional amulet necklace attributed to the Dayak peoples of Borneo, composed of a fibre-bound neck cord, a series of dark beads and several animal-derived elements.
The necklace is dominated by a large curved tooth or tusk-shaped element, accompanied by a smaller pointed pendant and a central organic amulet. The latter retains numerous minute coloured glass beads, providing an attractive contrast to the otherwise dark and earthy appearance of the necklace.
Among Dayak communities, animal teeth and other parts of powerful animals could have a significance extending beyond simple decoration. Incorporated into necklaces and personal ornaments, such materials could be associated with status, hunting and protective or spiritual qualities. Necklaces of this character were often highly individual objects, assembled from materials that carried particular value or meaning for their owner.
The extensive wear, aged fibre bindings and dark surfaces give this necklace a strong ethnographic character. The different components appear to have been assembled and worn over a considerable period.
Origin: Borneo, Indonesia
Cultural attribution: Dayak
Materials: Animal teeth or tusks, dark beads, small glass beads, fibre and other organic materials
Condition: Good ethnographic condition with considerable age and use-related wear. Some deterioration and losses to the organic materials are present, consistent with age and traditional use and clearly visible in the photographs.
An unusual and visually powerful Dayak necklace combining personal ornamentation with amuletic elements and the traditional use of animal materials.
