一对日本茶道卷轴:“日日是好日”(禅宗书法)与“启程” - 紙 - Shamon Setsudo - 日本 - 昭和年代(1926-1989)

Short description of the item and its origin This curated combined lot offers a profound glimpse into the spiritual heart of the Japanese Tea Ceremony (Chanoyu). It pairs two distinct yet harmoniously related genres: Zenga (Zen painting/calligraphy) and Haiga (Haiku painting). The first scroll features the famous Zen kōan "Nichinichi Kore Kōnichi" ("Every Day is a Good Day"), painted by the monk Shamon Setsudo. Depicting a jovial Hotei (Budai) figure, it embodies the Zen philosophy of mindfulness and finding joy in the present moment, regardless of external circumstances. Complementing this is a lively Haiga titled "Tabidachi" ("Setting Forth") by the renowned artist Gokei (Yamamoto Shoun). It illustrates the great haiku master Matsuo Bashō embarking on his famous journey, accompanied by Bashō's opening verse from Oku no Hosomichi regarding time as a traveler. Together, these works create a perfect dialogue for a tea room (chashitsu): one invites the guest to be present in the "now," while the other celebrates the poetic journey of life. Both scrolls are traditionally mounted with decorative brocade and wooden roller bars, with one of the roller ends made of resin. Collector’s Value & Benefits Cultural Depth: This lot combines two pillars of Japanese literati culture—Zen Buddhism and Haiku poetry—making it an excellent educational piece for collectors interested in Japanese philosophy. Artist Significance: Gokei (Yamamoto Shoun) is a highly respected figure in modern Nihonga and Haiga, known for his witty and expressive brushwork. His works are increasingly sought after by international collectors. Versatile Display: These scrolls are ideal for rotating in a Tokonoma (alcove) depending on the season or the specific theme of a tea gathering (e.g., using "Setting Forth" for a farewell gathering or "Every Day is a Good Day" for a regular gathering). Aesthetic Balance: The bold, heavy ink of the Zen calligraphy balances beautifully with the lighter, more narrative style of the Haiga, creating a visually stimulating pair. Dimensions (in cm) Scroll 1: 125 cm (H) x 54 cm (W) Scroll 2: 143 cm (H) x 65 cm (W) Weight (in grams) 1800 g Shipping method & International Duties Based on our inventory storage locations, we ship our items from either Japan or China to destinations worldwide.
