Item Description This charming antique Japanese chest (kotansu) is crafted from paulownia (kiri) wood, prized in Japan for its lightness, resistance to moisture, and warm, richly grained surface. The piece features six drawers arranged in a classic asymmetrical layout: two smaller stacked drawers on the upper left, a single wider drawer on the upper right of matching height, and three full-width drawers below. Each drawer front is fitted with black lacquered iron corner plates in a traditional cloud-and-vine motif, along with matching bail-style pull handles — decorative ironwork typical of Japanese cabinetry from the late Meiji to early Showa era. The wood has darkened beautifully with age to a deep amber-brown tone, while the drawer interiors remain pale and untouched, showing the natural warmth of the paulownia grain.
