The sculpture depicts a fierce shishi lion dynamically balancing upon a sacred ball. Its sharp expression, flowing mane, muscular body, and tense posture are all rendered with remarkable detail and energy. In Japanese tradition, the shishi lion is regarded as a sacred guardian beast that wards off evil spirits and protects homes, temples, and people from misfortune.
