About This Piece
A striking bronze vase in which a magnificent gold- and silver-toned peony stands out vividly against a deep green-to-black marbled surface, creating a richly decorative focal point across the front.
Design and Craftsmanship
This Takaoka Bronze Ware (高岡銅器) vase features an elaborate inlaid floral design covering the front.
At the center is a large blooming peony, rendered in gold and silver tones. Its overlapping petals are carefully defined with fine lines, while even the details of the flower's center are intricately depicted. The luminous peony contrasts beautifully with the Deep Green background.
Surrounding the peony are branches of plum blossoms, with delicate details extending to the centers of the individual flowers. Irises and chrysanthemums are also arranged around the main motif, creating a richly composed display of different flowers across the front of the vase.
Color and Surface
The surface is characterized by a distinctive marbled pattern ranging from Deep Green to black, with irregular variations of color extending across the entire body.
This coloration continues around the undecorated reverse, where the interplay of green and black can be appreciated on its own. On the front, the deep green surface provides a particularly striking contrast with the gold- and silver-toned inlay.
Form, Dimensions and Weight
The vase has a substantial, rounded daruma-shaped body, broad toward the lower section and narrowing toward the neck, with the rim gently flaring outward.
It measures approximately 25 cm in height and 21 cm in diameter, with a weight of approximately 2,050 g. Its broad body and weight of over 2 kg give it substantial physical presence.
Origin, Workshop Mark and Background
This is a work of Takaoka Bronze Ware (高岡銅器). The name Hōun (峰雲) is engraved on the base. Hōun is the name of a workshop passed down through generations within the tradition of Takaoka bronze ware.
The vase dates from the Shōwa period (昭和時代) and was previously owned by a private collector.
