This decorated plate is made from a special type of terracotta known as terra sigillata, which refers to a distinctive type of bright red Roman pottery. The use of this type of pottery, coated with a red glaze, replaced the black-glazed pottery used for domestic purposes. Initially, these pieces were made on a potter’s wheel, but they were soon widely produced using moulds. The decorative repertoire is very limited and almost exclusively geometric, with a predominance of circles.
