Large Hand-Engraved Brass Charger, Islamic Style A large circular brass charger, hand-chased across its entire surface. The wide flat rim is decorated with broad vertical cartouches containing calligraphic-style script in the thuluth manner, alternating with dense floral and arabesque scrollwork. The recessed well continues the decoration with further concentric bands of script-like ornament and foliate motifs around a central medallion. This type of engraved brass metalwork follows the decorative tradition associated with Cairoware / Mamluk-revival production from the Near East (Egypt/Syria), where calligraphic and arabesque ornament was combined on brass vessels and trays for both local use and export.
