According to the Gospel, John led an ascetic life along the banks of the Jordan River, clad in rough camel-hair garments and subsisting on wild honey and locusts. Upon turning thirty, he began to preach. He performed the ritual washings customary among the Jews but imbued them with new spiritual meaning, gaining great popularity among the inhabitants of Jerusalem from all walks of life. Among those he baptized was Jesus Christ (the event of the Epiphany)—an act Christ himself insisted upon, even though John did not consider himself worthy and felt the roles should be reversed.
