2020 ALBINO ROCCA NEBBIOLO D’ALBA – THREE-BOTTLE PIEMONTE LOT
A beautifully presented trio of 2020 Albino Rocca Nebbiolo d’Alba DOC from one of the respected family estates of Barbaresco.
This lot contains three full-size 750 ml bottles of 100 percent Nebbiolo from the highly attractive 2020 Piemonte vintage.
Albino Rocca’s Nebbiolo d’Alba occupies a particularly interesting position.
It comes from vineyards immediately outside the Barbaresco denomination in San Rocco Seno d’Elvio and offers many of the qualities associated with serious Langhe Nebbiolo – perfume, red fruit, acidity, polished tannins and terroir expression – while remaining classified as Nebbiolo d’Alba DOC.
Antonio Galloni of Vinous awarded the exact 2020 wine 93 points.
That is an unusually strong score for a Nebbiolo d’Alba and reinforces what makes this wine particularly compelling: genuine pedigree and serious Nebbiolo character without the price or extended ageing requirements of top Barbaresco and Barolo.
The combination offered here is highly attractive:

ALBINO ROCCA – BARBARESCO FAMILY ESTATE
Albino Rocca is a family-owned estate based in Barbaresco.
The family’s viticultural roots extend back to the nineteenth century, while the modern winemaking story developed from the middle of the twentieth century.
Giacomo Rocca began the family’s dedicated wine activity in the 1940s.
Albino Rocca subsequently established the estate that carries his name during the 1960s, building upon inherited family vineyards.
The next generation, led by Angelo Rocca, progressively expanded the vineyard holdings and reinforced the estate’s focus on quality and Barbaresco.
Today the estate is managed by Daniela, Monica and Paola Rocca together with Carlo Castellengo, continuing the family tradition into another generation.
Albino Rocca today works almost 20 hectares across Barbaresco, Neive and San Rocco Seno d’Elvio.
Nebbiolo remains at the centre of the estate identity.
The guiding philosophy is based on purity, elegance and the transparent expression of individual vineyards rather than excessive cellar intervention.
BARBARESCO KNOWLEDGE IN A NEBBIOLO D’ALBA
One of the most interesting aspects of this wine is who makes it.
Albino Rocca is fundamentally a Barbaresco specialist.
The same family, vineyard knowledge and understanding of Nebbiolo that underpin the estate’s Barbaresco wines are applied to this Nebbiolo d’Alba.
The difference is geographical classification rather than grape variety or seriousness of approach.
This gives the wine particular appeal for knowledgeable Piemonte buyers.
It provides an opportunity to experience the style of a recognised Barbaresco estate through a wine designed to be more accessible in youth.
THE “TERRA DI MEZZO”
Albino Rocca describes the origin of this Nebbiolo as the “Terra di Mezzo” – the middle land.
It is an evocative and highly appropriate description.
The grapes come from the westernmost hills of San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, within the commune of Alba.
They grow immediately beyond the geographical boundary that would allow the wine to be called Barbaresco.
The first Albino Rocca Nebbiolo d’Alba from this area was produced in 2007.
The vineyard characteristics include:
Western hills of San Rocco Seno d’Elvio
East-facing exposition
Marly soils
Predominance of limestone
Fine veins of sand
100 percent Nebbiolo
Vines planted between 1968 and 2012.
This combination creates a wine with genuine vineyard identity rather than simply a generic regional Nebbiolo.
NEBBIOLO – THE GREAT RED GRAPE OF PIEMONTE
Nebbiolo is one of Italy’s great indigenous grape varieties.
It is responsible for Barolo and Barbaresco and is renowned for a fascinating combination of aromatic delicacy and structural strength.
Nebbiolo can look deceptively light in colour.
Yet beneath its translucent ruby appearance lie substantial tannin, acidity and aromatic complexity.
Typical characteristics can include:
Wild cherry
Redcurrant
Raspberry
Rose
Violet
Blood orange
Dried herbs
Licorice
Tobacco
Tea
Leather
Spice
With bottle development, Nebbiolo can evolve toward increasingly complex aromas of dried flowers, autumn leaves, truffle, tobacco, leather and earth.
This ability to combine perfume, acidity, tannin and relatively moderate body is what makes Nebbiolo so distinctive.
THE 2020 VINTAGE IN PIEMONTE
2020 produced particularly attractive Nebbiolo in Piemonte.
The growing season was warm but generally avoided the excessive heat that can remove freshness and precision from Nebbiolo.
The best wines combine ripe fruit with perfume, fine tannins and excellent freshness.
Professional retrospective assessment of Piemonte 2020 has emphasised its aromatic character, textural delicacy, freshness and precision.
The vintage is especially appealing because many of the wines offer considerable pleasure relatively early while retaining sufficient structure for further development.
That character suits Albino Rocca’s Nebbiolo d’Alba particularly well.
The wine does not depend upon massive extraction.
Its attraction comes from aroma, energy, balance and polished structure.
INTERNATIONAL CRITICAL ACCLAIM
The exact 2020 Albino Rocca Nebbiolo d’Alba received:
93 POINTS
VINous
Antonio Galloni
The review identifies the wine as coming from the San Rocco Seno d’Elvio section belonging to Alba rather than the Barbaresco denomination.
Galloni highlighted a complex aromatic spectrum including:
Wild cherry
Cedar
Tobacco
Spice
Dried herbs
Blood orange
The wine was praised for its medium-bodied structure and polished tannins.
A 93-point Vinous rating is particularly noteworthy for a Nebbiolo d’Alba.
It places the wine well beyond the idea of a simple everyday regional red.
This is serious Nebbiolo from a recognised Barbaresco producer at a particularly attractive level of the Piemonte hierarchy.
VINIFICATION AND MATURATION
Albino Rocca’s approach allows Nebbiolo and vineyard character to remain clearly visible.
The estate specifies approximately eight months of maturation in oak casks followed by around four months of bottle refinement before release.
The objective is not to cover Nebbiolo with new-oak flavour.
Instead, maturation gives the tannins time to integrate while preserving fruit, perfume and freshness.
This creates a particularly appealing stylistic position between youthful Langhe-style Nebbiolo and the more structured, long-aged character of Barbaresco.
TASTING CHARACTER
The 2020 Albino Rocca Nebbiolo d’Alba is a classic medium-bodied Piemonte Nebbiolo with considerable aromatic complexity.
The colour is translucent ruby red with the natural tendency toward garnet associated with Nebbiolo.
The aromatic profile can show:
Wild cherry
Redcurrant
Blood orange
Rose
Violet
Dried herbs
Cedar
Sweet tobacco
Spice
Licorice
On the palate, the wine combines ripe red fruit with lively acidity and polished tannins.
The structure is present but not aggressive.
Freshness keeps the wine energetic.
The finish is savoury, persistent and distinctly Piedmontese.
The 2020 has sufficient maturity today to be immediately enjoyable while still possessing the structure for further cellar development.
DRINK NOW OR CONTINUE CELLARING
The 2020 Albino Rocca Nebbiolo d’Alba is now entering a particularly attractive drinking phase.
The fruit remains vivid.
The tannins have had several years to soften.
Aromatic complexity is beginning to develop beyond the primary red-fruit stage.
It can therefore be enjoyed now with a short period of air before serving.
At the same time, Nebbiolo’s natural acidity and tannin structure provide useful additional ageing potential.
Professionally stored bottles should continue to evolve over the coming years.
With three bottles, this lot offers excellent flexibility.
Open one now.
Follow another as the wine develops.
Keep the third for additional cellar ageing.
THREE FULL-SIZE BOTTLES
This lot contains:
3 x 750 ml
Total volume 2.25 litres.
The three-bottle format is particularly practical for a wine at this stage of development.
It allows the buyer to follow the evolution of the same wine rather than committing a single bottle to one drinking occasion.
For a 93-point Nebbiolo from a serious Barbaresco producer, that makes the trio particularly attractive.
FOOD PAIRING
Nebbiolo is one of the great gastronomic red varieties.
Its combination of acidity, tannin and aromatic complexity allows it to work with a remarkably broad range of dishes.
Excellent combinations include:
Risotto with mushrooms
Tajarin pasta
Tagliatelle with ragù
Veal
Roast beef
Braised beef
Duck
Game birds
Venison
Porcini mushrooms
Truffle dishes
Aged Parmigiano Reggiano
Castelmagno
Mature hard cheeses
For a traditional Piemonte experience, serve alongside tajarin, mushroom risotto or a meat dish finished with truffle.

DIRECT PROVENANCE
For collectible wine, provenance matters.
These bottles were sourced according to the OHMS Connoisseurs Choice philosophy of maintaining direct relationships with producers and avoiding uncertain secondary-market sourcing wherever direct provenance is available.
The wines subsequently entered professional OHMS cellar storage.
The provenance chain is therefore transparent and professionally controlled.
Producer source.
OHMS professional wine cellar.
Auction buyer.
This is particularly relevant as the wines continue to develop with bottle age.
PROFESSIONAL OHMS CELLAR STORAGE
OHMS places considerable emphasis on correct long-term wine storage.
Our objective is not simply to hold inventory.
It is to allow wine to develop naturally under appropriate cellar conditions.
Our approach focuses on:
Stable storage conditions
Appropriate humidity
Protection from light
Minimal unnecessary movement
Careful handling
Preservation of labels and capsules
These principles apply equally to mature collector bottles and younger wines being held for future development.
PROFESSIONAL PACKAGING AND SHIPPING
All bottles are carefully prepared for transport using a multi-layer protection system developed for collectible wine.
Labels and capsules are first covered with protective transparent film.
Each bottle is then individually wrapped in original OHMS Connoisseurs Choice paper.
The bottles are subsequently protected with bubble wrap.
Each protected bottle is placed into a Styrofoam or AirCover protective sleeve.
The complete lot is finally secured inside a sturdy cardboard wine shipping box.
The purpose of this system is to reduce bottle movement and protect labels, capsules and glass during transportation.
Shipping is performed via DPD throughout continental Europe.
Česká pošta or EMS is used for selected international destinations.
We do not ship to the Canary Islands.
COMBINED SHIPPING
Combined shipping is available for compatible OHMS lots purchased in the same auction.
Where destination, parcel weight, bottle format and platform shipping conditions permit, multiple lots can be consolidated into one professionally prepared shipment.
This is particularly useful for collectors purchasing several Italian wine lots from the same OHMS Single Seller Auction.
Large-format bottles, unusually heavy lots or destinations subject to carrier restrictions may require separate parcels.
OHMS CONNOISSEURS CHOICE
SINCE 1998
OHMS s.r.o. was established in 1998.
The original Connoisseurs Choice philosophy was built around premium and luxury collecting.
Fine wine subsequently became the principal specialist field.
Since 2003, OHMS has developed particular expertise in mature German Riesling, prestigious Mosel estates, Super Tuscans, Piemonte wines, vintage Champagne and collectible large-format bottles.
Direct relationships with producers and carefully documented provenance remain central to the philosophy.
The OHMS approach is based upon:
Provenance.
Terroir.
Authenticity.
Professional storage.
Transparent description.
Careful shipping.
Respect for wines whose character develops through time.
OHMS has also built a substantial publicly visible selling history on Catawiki, representing thousands of successfully sold objects, hundreds of buyer reviews and positive feedback above 99 percent.
For buyers purchasing fine wine online, that transparent transaction history provides an additional level of confidence.
FROM PIEMONTE NEBBIOLO TO HIGH-ALTITUDE GEISHA COFFEE
The OHMS philosophy of provenance and terroir today extends beyond fine wine.
OHMS is also connected with Finca Dindoš, our own high-altitude specialty coffee farm in Alto Quiel, Boquete, Panama.
Boquete is internationally recognised as one of the world’s great origins for specialty coffee, particularly the celebrated Geisha variety.
Finca Dindoš lies in the mountains of Alto Quiel, where elevation, volcanic soils, mountain rainfall, cool nights and pronounced day-to-night temperature differences create excellent conditions for slow coffee-cherry maturation and aromatic complexity.
At Finca Dindoš we cultivate high-altitude Geisha coffee using organic and environmentally sensitive farming practices with respect for the surrounding mountain ecosystem.
The farm also produces cascara from carefully dried ripe coffee cherries.
PIEMONTE MARL AND PANAMA VOLCANIC SOIL
For OHMS, the connection between fine wine and specialty coffee is natural.
Both begin with agriculture.
Both are shaped by origin.
Limestone-rich marl in Piemonte.
Devonian slate on the Mosel.
Volcanic mountain soils in Alto Quiel.
Climate.
Exposure.
Plant genetics.
Selective harvesting.
Careful processing.
Patience.
Terroir.
Different continents.
Different products.
The same underlying principle.
Origin matters.
