Massive silver and vermeil ciborium – Martial Dejean – Premier Empire, circa 1798-1809 - Paris

Relying on a wide circular foot with a raised edge, this ciborium features an elegant engraved and chased decor of palmettes, foliage, garlands and vegetal motifs, characteristic of the neoclassical decorative vocabulary of the period. The ovoid knot is also adorned with raised foliage.

The wide hemispherical cup, sober and balanced, preserves inside a beautiful Mercure gilding (vermeil) intended to protect the silver in contact with the Holy Species.

It is surmounted by a domed lid richly engraved with a crown of flowers and foliage, topped by a small cross.

The entire piece bears several old French hallmarks
The cock shield mark corresponding to the 1st title of French silver from 1798-1809 period
The guarantee mark with a woman's head.
The maker’s mark, noted M, star, D, is given as Martial Dejean’s.

A liturgical piece of fine presence, interesting both for the quality of its decoration and for its substantial weight and precise dating at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Very good overall condition for its age, with signs of use, small irregularities and surface wear consistent with a liturgical piece of more than two centuries. The interior gilding is still well preserved.
