Massive silver ciborium with its cover cross - Émile Doublet (ED) - Neo-Classical Purist Style - France / Import - Circa 1900
Prestigious solid-silver ciborium with cover, a sacred metalsmithing masterpiece dating from the turn of the century (circa 1900). This liturgical object adopts a neo-classical style of great sobriety, prioritizing the purity of lines over decorative excess.
The Master Silversmith’s Mark (Maître-orfèvre): Clearly struck in a horizontal diamond on the rim of the cup and on the cross. The initials E and D are distinctly read, separated by a central symbol (a key or a vertical tool). This is the mark of Parisian silversmith Émile Doublet, specializing in high-end ecclesiastical art, active in Paris at the end of the 19th century and the very start of the 20th.
The Official Control Mark: On the cross and the cup there is an oval-shaped mark representing a Swan in profile. In France, the Swan mark is the “hazard” or “customs guarantee” mark. It certifies that the object is made of solid silver (minimum fineness guaranteed at 800/1000), commonly used to seal objects re-checked by French guarantee offices or of European origin/importation.
