An intriguing lead amulet of the Viking / Early Medieval period, approximately 21 mm, formed as a circular pendant with a substantial integral suspension loop. Across its face survives an enigmatic arrangement of raised characters, linear signs and symbol-like forms. Their irregular configuration gives the object the appearance of a magical inscription or cipher rather than conventional decorative ornament. Several marks appear letter-like, although the surviving forms are too worn to offer a secure reading. The mysterious composition recalls the much older tradition of magical and Gnostic amulets, on which letters, sacred names, symbols and deliberately obscure characters could form part of protective formulas. Such traditions continued to influence the broader magical culture of Late Antiquity and the medieval world. For this object, however, the individual signs cannot presently be identified as a specific Gnostic formula. Its strongly weathered surface, mineral deposits and partially obscured symbols give the pendant considerable character—the inscription seems almost concealed within the metal. The original suspension loop remains prominent, and the amulet is now presented with a modern silver ring and chain as a wearable historical jewel.
