Both figures feature the distinctive rounded hairstyle and gentle facial expression associated with Usaburo’s creative kokeshi, while contrasting dark and natural wood tones give the pair a particularly attractive presence. One doll is decorated with elegant wheat-like motifs carved into the dark wooden body, creating a restrained and sophisticated appearance. ARTIST BACKGROUND Okamoto Usaburo (1918–2009) was the founder of Usaburo Kokeshi in Gunma Prefecture and became one of the important figures in the development of modern creative kokeshi. Rather than relying only on traditional brush decoration, he developed techniques combining carving, burning, painting, and the natural grain of wood to create more sculptural and expressive forms. His work received major recognition in Japan, including the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award at the All Japan Kokeshi Competition in 1978. Usaburo Kokeshi subsequently developed into one of Japan's best-known creative kokeshi workshops, based in Gunma Prefecture. “Kamon” is also documented as a work by Okamoto Usaburo and is known in collector markets as one of his Sosaku Kokeshi designs.
