His reign was shaken by the Babai revolt and, in 1243, the Seljuk army was decisively defeated by the Mongols at Köse Dağ. Afterward, the sultanate became increasingly dependent on the Mongol Ilkhanate, marking the beginning of its political decline despite continued prosperity in Anatolian trade and culture.
